No. 6 for Christmas, 2022

I used a Found Relative, a stamp (Mundo Holly, Ellen Hutson), printed tissue paper, scrapbook paper, a Remnant Rub, and glitter glues to make this tag.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge for this week's "Tag" theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Perfidy & Travail

I'm sharing a tag today that's made with a Found Relative, Remnant Rubs, and scraps of Paper Stash, embellished with Liquid Pearls and typewritten text.

The girls were roughed up a bit with a damp piece of Magic Eraser (perfect to use when a "gentle touch" is best) to lighten their flat black outfits that were then tinted with Pitt Brush Pens.

I also cut out tiny bits, here and there (around their arms, faces, etc.) to improve the factory cutting and make them appear more realistic. A final important step is to paint or ink the edges (I used black) to make the white paper backing blend in with the background (best to do before pasting).

I also scraped through the Remnant Rubs with an Xacto knife to further the distressed look.

I'm linking up to the Simon Monday challenge which is a "Fall Mood Board."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Artist Trading Cards

Prompted by Simon's "Artist Trading Card" challenge, may I present this trio made with an image transfer on kraft card stock using the sample ad for the Tim Holtz "Groups" Found Relatives as the background.

The next layer is white heat-embossed stamping (Tim Holtz Mail Art stamp set) along with some Tim Holtz Photobooth pics.

My stock of colored embossing powders is limited so I used permanent inks to tint/tone-down some of the stark white and also used a few strips of Tim Holtz Design Tapes. I painted on the white border.

I don't make many trading cards but if you'd like to see a few more, here's a link

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Our Duty

I've used a Found Relative (Tim Holtz) to feature in this tag. Was Halloween just around the corner since this little tyke is wearing what appears to be a uniform jacket (that's a tad too big)?

The flowers were drawn by Alphonse Mucha (clipped from one of his posters) and I also used a torn bit of book paper tinted with inks and embossed with polka dots.

All the collage elements were placed on top of an oversized image of an old envelope that was found in a book on philately.

As I've mentioned before, I find the best way to tint the "relatives" is to use Pitt Artist Brush pens.

I'm linking to Simon's Monday challenge since Halloween is the theme.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Daughter of Atrides

A tag to share made with some Tim Holtz stuff: a Found Relative, a butterfly and a stencil called Thatched.

The Simon September card kit came with some of his Sentiment label stickers that didn't really appeal to me so I used them to cover a manila tag. Then I applied another layer over them using texture paste and the stencil.

I tinted the dress, skin tone and accents using Pitt artist brushes which are made from India ink, are waterproof, permanent and easily applied to the slick surface (highly recommend).

There are some collage bits: the text is from an old book, there's the crown and the flower-like accents (which are actually from an astronomy diagram).

I used some Liquid Pearls along the bottom.

I'm linking up to Simon's Monday challenge--this week's theme is to have "fun with stencils."

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Postcard

A postcard (from the edge?).... Expressing my feelings about events of the world we find ourselves in makes me appreciate the motivation behind artworks from other tumultuous times.

I took the back of a vintage postcard, added image transfers (window, birds), clipped Found Relatives, stamping (Tim Holtz Mail Art and Correspondence), tinting with markers and typewritten text.

If you're not familiar with my image transfer technique, here's a step-out I posted for your reference.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Praying for Time

 Praying for Time

I've used a favorite Found Relative for this tag, I can't explain why this image appeals to me like it does and I only use it for special pieces.

This Christmas tag has a melancholy side as I made it to commemorate a singer songwriter who passed away four years ago on Christmas day. His name was George Michael and he wrote a song called "Praying for Time." The words to this ballad are especially poignant during the holiday season and speak volumes about this tumultuous year.

The techniques I used include fussy-cutting, distressing, stamping (hand-carved), and placement of ephemera on some Paper Stash.

I think it's worth noting that whenever possible, I peel the backs off photos, ephemera, etc., and rub away as much of the paper as I can to make these elements nice and thin. They naturally become more fragile but I encase them with medium (applied to both sides) so they hold up well when pasted down or painted over.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

Girlfriend

I would say my greeting cards look a lot like the tags I make, or a journal page, for that matter. Here I have assembled one using a hand-cut botanical print, a Found Relative and some Collage Paper (Tim Holtz) onto a book page stamped with a French postage mark. I machine-stitched a border and embellished it with 3D paint (Liquid Pearls).

Everything was tinted with Distress inks and I used a watered-down layer of off-white paint over the girls dresses to change their appearance.

I think a key element in this composition is the addition of dark shading behind the girls which gives it some dimension. And it was mounted onto a kraft paper card base which reinforces the vintage vibe.

As always, I hope this post finds you well and happy and I appreciate your visit.

Until next time, take care.

12 Tags for Christmas 2019 - Believe in the Magic

So, all it takes is a prompt from Simon's Monday challenge and I'm off! This week's theme is "Cityscape" (add some buildings) and that was the inspiration for tag number eight.

The building image (Carabelle Studio Dans la Rue) was stamped on old book paper, tinted with inks and colored pencils then embellished with dimensional dots painted and glittered to look like Christmas string lights.

The little miss was cut from a Found Relative (Tim Holtz) and the kitty looks just like Howie, my cat, who turned 18 this month. It's Christmas everyday for this little guy who I spoil beyond belief!

Summer

I'm celebrating summer with this project, prompted by two blog challenges: Simon's Midsummer Blues and Frilly Funkie Junkie's Let's Do It Again. The blue part is self-explanatory and doing it again meant revisiting an old project and creating a remake.

You may know that I do love fussy-cutting and especially the flowers from the Tim Holtz Wallflower paper stash. So that, along with a Baseboard Doll and Lace Baseboard Frame, was what I used to assemble this project.

It was mounted inside the back of a wooden panel that I covered with paper. The doll's left arm was originally bent up high and was altered by slicing and dicing and piecing together some baseboard from another doll.

Here's the original project that inspired the "do-over." It is a Configurations Box I made for CHA 2015. Paper dolls hadn't been invented yet so I cut the girls from a Found Relative photo. It was the year the Wallflower paper stash came out and I assembled a garden for them to sit in.

So, it is still mid-summer here in the desert and we'll have at least two and a half more months of high temps. There hasn't been any monsoons that bring rain so the dry spell weather-wise coincides with my own personal artistic dry spell and lack of posts. I'm thankful for the prompts this week and it feels so good to be working again!

Update: So proud this post became a Top Pick on the TFJB blog--thank you!

She's Changed

My projects from the Tim Holtz Idea-ology Creativation 2019 booth were returned to me yesterday and I made two changes to one of them.

Formerly called Vintage Clip Book #15, she's #13 now (the original Number Token fell off during the take down) and I decided to get rid of the dot border because it just didn't work and wasn't necessary.

The Vintage Clip used for this example is 2-1/2" wide and, as you can see, the book is not much bigger than the clip. I pasted a piece of red paper behind the Number Token to make it stand-out more, added one of the new Hardware Heads and used Gorilla Glue to re-attach it to the clip.

I think the girl with dog is a new Paper Doll image (I haven't seen her before) and she was the perfect size to use with my fussy-cut and Ephemera pieces.

The rest of my projects are in the previous post.

Creativation Idea-ology 2019

For details on this project (Wildflowers)--here's the link.

For more details on Vintage Clip Book #15 (now #13) see this post.

These are my contributions to the Tim Holtz Idea-ology booth at Creativation 2019.*

There are some terrific new products this year and some of my favorites include the new Ephemera Pack (Keepsakes), the new Layers (Remnants) and of course the Vintage Clips (which I used on small antique books).

There's not much to say that isn't already obvious technique-wise--it's just some fussy-cutting, painting, and pasting. To see the details, click on the photo for a larger view. Be sure to contact me if you have any questions, there's a link to my email address in the sidebar or you can leave me a comment.

Perhaps there will be a blog hop like last year. If that's the case, I'll pick a project and include all the specifics. Do you have a favorite you'd like to know more about? Update 1/29/2019 - There will be a blog hop (with giveaways) scheduled for February 5 hosted again this year by Richele Christensen (californiaARTgirl.blogspot.com) and will include the designers for all of Tim's new products (Idea-ology, Stampers Anonymous, Sizzix, etc.).

Thanks for stopping by and a big thank-you to Paula and Tim for asking me to contribute again this year. If you are interested in seeing my work for the Idea-ology booths from 2015-2018, here's the link.

*The last two pieces did not appear in Tim's video.

The Beekeeper's Daughter

I've made a Vignette Tray assemblage/collage to share with you today. I chose the smaller tray size and used whiting (a wood stain) and some light sanding to alter the surface. This technique is known as "pickling."

I used this finish on a CHA 2017 project and here's the link if you'd like to see another example.

A Found Relative was cut-out and placed between a sandwich of two Baseboard Frames and vintage book paper of a blue sky was attached to the back.

The background consists of the stained wood of the tray along with vintage book paper text.

The large white script was made using a home-made stencil and white paint on Plain Collage Paper.

By using the collage paper, I have lots more control over where it's placed and after pasting down it becomes almost invisible.

The tiny bee on top is an image transfer on the backside of a vintage button (I filled in the holes with paste medium).

The sunburst is also a transfer and the image came from a Trader Joe's flyer.

The gentlemen were cut from French Industrial paper stash and there's also a vintage postage stamp.

The flowers were cut from the Wallflower paper stash and that's an Idea-ology key dabbed with white paint and dark ink to distress it.

The honeycomb was made with a Tim Holtz Mixed Media thinlet.

This piece was a long-time in the making and there were several versions before I finalized it.

Funny thing, though--I ended up returning to my original idea. I guess I needed to try out all the possibilities before I could fully embrace the design.

Tell Your Story

Hours have gone by with no end in sight. A work in progress just won't come together and I needed a break. So, I made a tag with random bits from previous pieces and I feel better now.

It's a lesson in remembering to let go of control, to trust your instincts and to embrace the process instead of the end result.

Extra Ordinary Joy

Embracing the old and the new and some extra-ordinary joy with this tag, made on-the-fly today because I could and I did.

I have a lot of side-projects going on related to reorganizing my crafting space. Like converting some favorite wooden stamps to cling now that I have a stamping platform. I tested one of them today (French Collage) using a Big & Juicy stamp pad (remember these?) on a manila tag. And I just couldn't leave well enough alone. So....

I curated a Found Relative (the latest release has new images) and fussy-cut it like I used to before there were Paper Dolls.

I cut out some images from a newly purchased stamp set called Stamp Collector, then foraged around for more paper bits and found the leaf/vine cutting and the polka dot paper (I save most of my scraps).

Put it all together with a glue stick, add some Remnant Rubs and Scribbles (the dotted border) and there you have it. Extra Ordinary Joy!

I Know

Love this little miss and those doe-eyes--she's included in the latest release of Tim Holtz Paper Dolls. She's sitting inside a Mini Cabinet Card that I fussy-cut and behind it is the backside of the card that I tinted to provide a darker backdrop.

The frame's scrollwork was embellished with a Picket Fence Distress Marker and Glossy Accents along with dots made with Scribbles. The butterfly was stamped, cut-out, tinted and crackled.

My starting point for this tag was trying out the new Idea-ology Worn Wallpaper and an attempt to achieve a peeling effect. That's cardboard as the base filled in with texture paste to simulate the look of wooden laths and plaster.

A Clippings Sticker, more dots of Scribbles and a piece of Lace Trimming were also used.

Find Away

I like challenge blogs and my favorite is the Simon Says Stamp's Monday Challenge Blog. And I really, really like challenge blogs when the theme is to create a tag or something with a tag attached.

As I am rather fond of the format :) for this week's Tag It challenge, I used both suggestions and made a tag with tags.

Tim's tiny stamps, washi, tissue wrap, remnant rubs, found relatives and fabric bits were used to create my, dare I say? unconventional masterpiece. No matter what you might think of this tag--you gotta love that faucet (so much detail in such a tiny stamp)!

Abbreviations.

Abbreviations: Paper Dolls, backing paper from a Found Relative, Clippings Sticker, and text from a book pasted onto one manila tag.

She Meant It

I'm sharing an art journal page with you today, made by transferring an advertisement from a magazine with gel medium then highlighting it with black and white gel pens, a Found Relative, some butterflies (from the Snippets ephemera pack) and text (from Clippings stickers). I also transferred book text to fill in some empty spots.

I was really drawn to the advertisement--a room with wonderful plaster and wood forms, a large framed mirror over such a decorative fireplace and one fabulous chandelier. How clever to furnish it with a modern style sofa and rug.

And so I began this art journal journey celebrating the page and becoming more intimate with all of it's interesting embellishments.

Update: After posting, I went to the ad's website (The Rug Company) and found the original photo so I thought I'd include it for another perspective. BTW, the rug comes in several sizes and prices range from $3,500 to $51,000! It's hand-knotted silk.
